Adventure with Purpose – Peru

A popular South American destination, Peru receives thousands of visitors a year for good reason, but how much do the locals benefit? The 10-day Adventures with Purpose: Peru itinerary seeks to make an epic trip mutually beneficial by exploring its famous sites through local eyes.

Arriving in Cusco, the ancient capital of the Inca Empire, guests will head straight to the beautiful hills of the Sacred Valley to meet the families that have been here for centuries. For an authentic feel of everyday life in these sacred lands, visits to all the big names are combined with opportunities to meet people off the tourist trail.

With a lazy afternoon stroll to Ollantaytambo ruins from a boutique hotel; hiking past rural farms between twin-hitters Maras and Moray; and spending the morning with a weaving community up the road from the buzzing Pisac market.

Of course, a day will also be set aside to admire the iconic Machu Picchu. Down in Cusco, travellers will stay at Hotel Los Niños, founded to support orphans in the area, while exploring the UNESCO city without a carbon footprint, taking an e-bike and walking tour of its ruins and colonial buildings.

There’ll also be the chance to visit some amazing community projects, enjoying lunch at a local school for girls and a ceramics workshop seeking to preserve artistic traditions. Taking the incredibly scenic Orient Express train over the Andes, the tour then winds down with an indigenous homestay experience on Lake Titicaca’s peaceful shores, before flying to the capital.

HOW: ‘Adventures with Purpose: Peru’ tailor-made tour for 10 days from £4,255 (land only price) and this includes all meals, transport, an expert team, accommodation, and entrance fees. Ten trees are planted per passenger on this trip.

Adventures with Purpose -Sri Lanka

The Adventures with Purpose: Sri Lanka is an extraordinary journey through the cultural and historic heartlands of Sri Lanka and presents a wonderful mix of conservation, community and crafts. Staying at some ground-breaking eco-resorts, camps and hotels, as well as enjoying a truly unique hosted stay with a local Sri Lankan family, guests will experience a side of the country that few visitors ever see. Add to that a chance to visit many of the island’s most iconic heritage sites and there is an adventure that really is fit for purpose.

From its colourful capital travellers will venture across a landscape blanketed with lush plantations and natural beauty, where World Heritage Sites assail guests at every turn and traditional arts and crafts still hold sway against the encroaching modern world.

Those on the tour will encounter hermit monks and hatchling turtles, spend time with artists and artisans and learn to cook the local cuisine the way the locals do. They’ll also enjoy a scenic railway journey through the central highlands, spend two days at a safari camp and experience the unique concept of the world’s first Analogue Forest.

A land blessed with an array of natural and cultural heritage that belies its small stature, Sri Lanka is so much more than just what lies at the surface. This unique journey of discovery allows guests to venture beyond the tourist trail and deep into the heart of the land of serendipity.

Adventures with Purpose – Georgia

Steeped in the legends and stories of the classical era, Georgia has absorbed the influences and traditions of everyone from Eurasian monarchs and Persian kings, to Ottoman Turks and Soviet imperialists. A land with a long and fascinating heritage, Georgia is nonetheless a relative newcomer when it comes to sustainable tourism initiatives.

However, it is making good progress and over the next decade, the country aims to develop and promote eco-tourism across the board, with many of its initiatives focusing on preserving its traditional crafts and protecting its unique landscapes and archaeological treasures. This is something that Wild Frontiers are very keen to highlight and encourage.

The Adventures with Purpose: Georgia tour begins in its capital, Tbilisi, and guests will then venture across a landscape of sublime beauty, crossing a countryside liberally bedecked with traditional villages and historic old towns, all set against the magnificent backdrop of the towering and mysterious Caucasus Mountains.

Along the way, the tour will experience the vibrant life of daily markets, learn to make bread and Georgian sweets and discover a wealth of social enterprise projects that are aimed at promoting and preserving traditional customs and skills, as well as empowering local communities across the region.
